Famous Art Facts: Mona Lisa.

While some claim that Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting is a self-portrait of the artist himself dressed as a woman, research has concluded it is likely a portrait of a woman named Lisa Gherardini, a member of a prominent Florentine family and wife of a wealthy silk merchant. Leonardo’s father allegedly knew Gherardini’s father very well, and the painting was possibly commissioned by him. The Mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1506, although some think that da Vinci continued to work on it until 1517. Da Vinci started the painting in Italy, and he finished it in France. The Mona Lisa is on display at the famous Louvre museum in Paris in a climate-controlled room with bullet-proof glass.
